This project was so much fun, starting with a standard sized stl file created by STL Flix and increasing the size to 200%, segmented the pieces to fit the print bed and added spring clip attachment points. This is to help with alignment when glueing the segments together.

Once printed it was a simple process of glueing the segments together because of the connectors, the head printed in two sections not including the horns and the shield in four. The shield was tricky to glue as I wanted to save time and put all four segments together at once, to help with this we used an adjustable corner clamp.

After each part had dried a grey primer was applied and on to the exciting part, painting. The shield didn't take much inspiration with a wood effect already built into the middle of the print and rivets on the edges, a few tones of brown for the denter section and silver for the edges.

I had a few ideas about the colours for the dragon head and went with the stone and blue colour. using an airbrush to lay down the base coats of grey and blue, this was followed up with a darker tones for the recesses. From years of miniture painting the technique of dry brushing highlights really made the features of the head pop.

Finally to protect the paint a matte lacquer is applied in four thin coats, this also allows the model to be cleaned without the fear of damaging the paint job.
As mentioned at the top this project started with an stl file from STL Flix we sell a full range of dragon head shields via our online shop, the link to which is on our main page 'Creative Prints Catalogue' if you would like to purchase a large scale head please use the contact form and include which dragon you would like.
